Learn, Un-Learn and Re-Learn
Growing up, we’ve all held our own individual views on a number of things. For some values and views, we’ve continuously held onto them because our forefathers thought it fit to have them & for some reason due to the absence of free thought, they were trickled down & imposed upon us.
Without questioning and wondering why something that society, religion & culture have imposed on us, we’ve obliged for a number of years. To avoid a lecture or two, we’ve played dumb for the longest time possible as we watch things float by.
The thought of having a different view contrary to what your society has always believed in will get people hating you, questioning your thinking, spewing hate and so on. Today, when you have a different thought & view on sexuality, gender and just about anything, you are either hailed or you are ridiculed. It gets crazy when you are vulnerable or a minority.
Luckily for those that have attained a higher level of education & enormous exposure, they’ve decided to break the beliefs and question them. They’ve stood their ground, used their vocal ability to try and break the status quo. Some have been successful, some have been overwhelmed and given up on their struggle, some have been ridiculed by the very society that still holds onto the old values & norms.
Along those lines, there are a bunch of naive folks that are out there. They’re raw, they still hold onto the same old values but are seemingly willing to learn, they’ve given themselves a chance to unlearn what they know and relearn what they should know. Some have continued to hold onto what they feel is the right value and norm. This has caused as much friction, hate speech, cyberbullying, homophobia, toxicity, and misogyny
We’ve hated those that don’t hold the same values as us, we’ve openly insulted them on social media, blocked them out of rage & anger, we’ve even brought this hate to real life. Youths have been divided by opinions and school of thoughts. Camps have been formed, WhatsApp groups have been made & this all comes from the fact that they don’t hold the same opinions on a number of things. It’s crazy!
Admittedly, there are things I don’t know & those I know. There are values & norms I believe in and those I don’t believe in and will never! I’m not perfect, I get it but neither are you who believes that your opinion holds more power over mine & I should follow it by all means. That’s lame!
Learning never stops( and never should), there are things people don’t know and there are things people know & are learning on a daily. The world that was yesterday is not the world that is today! Over time you learn a new thing or two on a daily & you really need to allow yourself to learn more of what you know, unlearn what you know that may be wrong(if you feel you are indeed wrong…cmon, trust your gut) & re-learn a better version of what it is you think you know. It’s the first step!
Could be the way business works, the way you are supposed to treat a woman, the way you should conduct yourself at work, the way you conduct yourself when you have nothing & when you have something, the way you should air out your opinions without infringing or stamping on other people’s rights & feelings.
Life as we envisioned it is not what it is right now, it’s not the fantasy, & vibe we wished & hoped it would be. We’ve been slapped by the reality that life really is and we’ve to do everything in our means to be on our feet no matter what. The bottom line is you need to Learn, Unlearn & Relearn a lot of things as a youth. Everything seems to transform super fast and you will catch up, then you must do everything that it takes!
